12 Times Eminem Spit Lyrical Fire

8. Cleanin’ Out My Closet (The Eminem Show)

Have you ever been hated or demonstrated against? Eminem has, and in this song, Em lays out all his motivations on the line. For everything controversial the rapper has done, it was to represent the ‘motherf*ckin’ kid that’s behind.’

In this confessional track, Em creates a lyrical biography of growing up without his father, torn between sadness of being left, and anger at his abandonment. Eminem then vows that he would never leave his daughter.

He then goes on to discuss the relationship between him and his mother - a constant target in his earlier work - and how he witnessed her abusing prescription pills and how she was accusing other people for her not having any money. Eminem then addresses the recent ID-X CD, ‘Set The Record Straight,’ in which the rap group had Em’s mother, Debbie Mathers, reading a letter addressed to him on a track. The angered rapper retorts that people will see through her lies, and she will be all alone.

Given the personal nature of the song, Eminem seems to have had put a lot of effort into the technique. At the start of the first verse, his flow is immediately engaging. The explosive internal rhyme halfway through the verse conveys nothing but anger, ‘all this commotion, emotions run deep as oceans, explodin’.’

It is hard to miss why this is one of Slim’s most successful commercial tracks.
