12 Worst Sellout Albums In Hard Rock
8. Hot Space - Queen
If there was any hard rock act that did their sell out sound right, it was Queen. After casually pushing the boundaries of rock music in the late 70's, the band entered the 80's with a pop sheen that gave them fantastic gems like "Another One Bites the Dust." They may have gotten the first sell out record right, but the follow up was a bit too far into pop territory.
Compared to almost any other record in the band's catalog, Hot Space is regarded as a musical pedestrian rather than a fully fledged album. Though the record does contain one of the band's greatest singles with the David Bowie collaboration "Under Pressure," the rest of the record sounds like the band trying to capture the same magic they had with "Another Bites the Dust..." and slipping under the bar each time.
There are some heartfelt songs like the John Lennon tribute "Life is Real," but this was one of the first instances when the Queen sound could be described as hollow. Looking back on the sessions nowadays, even drummer Roger Taylor expressed distaste for the record and outright dismissed some of the songs. It may have had a great single on it, but the staying power of that one song was not enough to save the record.
