13 Great Songs About Death

10. Tom Jones - Delilah

If you ever want your kids to be successful, apparently you should be naming them Delilah. In between Plain White T's and this 1968 hit from Tom Jones, there's something about the name that brings in that mula.

Pulled from the album of the same name, 'Delilah' is one of Jones' more recognisable and revered tracks, reaching number two in the British charts and became the sixth best-selling single of the year. Something of a red herring, the song is described as a "murder ballad" despite musically being "a rip-roaring, we-are-the-champions kind of number" as described by Jones himself.

The story depicts a man discovering his beloved Delilah has been cheating on him with another man. Despite realising that the girl is no good, he decides to go the route of waiting for the side-chick to leave before going to Delilah's door and stabbing her to death. Which is one way of dealing with things. The song ends with the narrator begging Delilah for forgiveness as the police come to take him away.

The song of passion is only complimented by Jones' powerful voice, and the catchiness of the chorus has made it a firm favourite with both the Welsh Rugby Union team and Stoke City FC. I mean, New Zealand has the haka so I guess?
