https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJt1rdFZXlY The high-concept team-up of thrashs loudest, most outrageous sons and The San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Kamen might still seem like too much of a gimmick for some Metallica purists, but the opportunity to see familiar songs through a new, high-glossed filter shouldnt ever be under-estimated. The addition of classical instruments and some changes to the compositions of songs to accommodate gave the set-list a wonderfully creepy tone while simultaneously super-sizing the songs. And while the whole affair continues to attract accusations of Spinal Tap-like self-indulgence, the execution of the show lifted it far beyond gimmick and curio into a bona-fide necessity for fans. And not to mention, this is easily one of the most accessible concert performances by the band, and a great in-point for fans less inclined to classify themselves as trash aficionados.
