Moving swiftly on from experimental pop we come to more conventional rock and roll, but an example of which that is no less impressive. Drenge are a two piece grunge band from Derbyshire, consisting of brothers Eoin (guitar and vocals) and Rory Loveless (drums). The band are an explosive example of the genre at its finest, with aggressive drum fills and harsh guitar playing accompanied by equally-aggressive vocals, serving to remind the listener of grunge pioneers Nirvana. But to write Drenge off as a simple imitation would be a crime quite frankly. For one, their very White Stripes-esque dynamic allows them to achieve a completely unique sound. A relentless barrage of sound is created within nearly every song on their debut album, as a heavy amount of hypnotic guitar riffs, distortion and crashing drums are applied in equal measure, whether it's for crashing two minute onslaughts such as "I Don't Want To Make Love To You" or larger epics such as the eight minute highlight "Let's Pretend". Whilst what they've produced in the studio is immensely impressive, its what they do live that really astounds. With performances on shows such as "Later... With Jools Holland" and festival slots throughout last year allowing them to show their incredible musical talent to much larger audiences. 2014 is set to be a very large year for Drenge as they hopefully ride off the back of these performances and become much larger players within the rock and roll world - God knows they deserve it.
