14 Things Only Trivium Fans Will Understand

6. The Real Origin Of The Name

Did it come from a distortion pedal type called a triumvirate? Perhaps Mike Bloomfield's album of the same name from 1973? Neither, it's actually derived from the Latin word 'Trivium', designated to be 'three ways' or 'three roads', with an emphasis being on them all coming together. In Trivium's case it's been theorised this 'three way mix' can apply to the three main styles of music that are all converging in their sound; melodic death metal, thrash and metalcore. There's also the fact that in Latin history it can represent three of the core seven learning arts; that of grammar, logic and rhetoric, thereby translating pretty nicely into Trivium's output as something you get taught/listen to, the process of interpretation and then what you do thereafter. 2011's In Waves took this particularly open-ended approach to lyrics and interpretation, and it's clear Matt Heafy still likes the idea of the band's music being totally open to each listener.
