12. Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray
Hidden tracks can be a fantastic thing. My all-time favourite Clash track is the uncredited 'Train In Vain' from London Calling, and 'Her Majesty' from Abbey Road is a lovely and silly waggling tongue to the heavy feelings of The Beatles' swansong. Some can completely ruin the feel of an otherwise perfectly weighted record, however. It's A Shame About Ray is a beautifully judged, perfectly sequenced poppy response to the miserable excesses of grunge. Tacking on the throwaway and gimmicky cover of 'Mrs Robinson' to later pressings not only ruined the flow of the record, but seemed like an intrusive punchline.
