Aesop Rock, or Ian Bavitz to his mother, has been one of underground, alternative hip hops kingpins over the last twenty years carrying the banner alongside Atmosphere and MF Doom. In terms of style, hes so unorthodox, its like hearing an alien rap. Every single one of Aesop Rocks tracks is dense and complex, listening to him is like getting lost in a labyrinth. He can be difficult to get your head around because hes so wordy and verbose, it can feel like trying to read a thesaurus in a tumble dryer. But then all of sudden, out of nowhere, stuff just clicks. A snippet of a verse will come into focus and make complete, perfect sense. And its magic. Linguistically, theres probably nobody better. Aesop Rock gives you so much to unpack he can make your head hurt. But hes been doing it, doing it and doing it right for the best part of two decades mixing Dragon Ball Z references with the classics wrapped in a tongue tying drawl that would leave most other emcees with injuries. Listening to him is like watching a Shakespeare play, it can take a while, but once your ears acclimatise its the purest of poetry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hChKXNpoPI8
