15 Best Albums Of The Decade (So Far)

13. Death Grips - The Powers That B

Third Worlds/ Harvest

Copies of The Powers That B by experimental hip-hop outfit Death Grips should probably come with free earplugs; it's inevitable that someone in the household isn't going to be a fan of their idiosyncratic blend of aggressive vocals and loud, insistent drum patterns which sometimes resemble an unhinged gabba tune.

Yes, Death Grips on the whole and The Powers That B in particular are something of an acquired taste, with their music sometimes embodying the essence of nihilism (a view hardly dulled by the group's notoriously uncooperative relationship with fans and the media alike). Split across two discs, the first part Niggas On The Moon has to be one of the most consciously chaotic pieces of music released this decade, with Zak Hill (of Hella fame) smashing out rapid beats at a frenetic pace while MC Ride battles with Bjork samples for vocal space.

Part 2, Jenny Death, strips back the electronic instrumentation and delivers some solid, energetic tunes which fans of The Money Store are likely to appreciate more, with a greater rock influence than on Niggas On The Moon. As a group the future of Death Grips is constantly up in the air, but as an album The Powers That B is guaranteed to endure.
