14. Jon Hopkins - Immunity

John Hopkins Immunity
Domino Records

It's taken quite some time for Jon Hopkins the solo artist to show his real strengths in full; much of his career has been spent acting as a producer for other artists, some great (Brian Eno and David Holmes please take a bow), and others less so (apologies to Coldplay fans but, well, Coldplay are rubbish).

Immunity, Hopkins's fourth studio album, represents the biggest evolution yet in the development of a distinctive sound and style that marks him as one of today's greatest electronic music producers. A keen advocate of using found sounds, these seemingly simple recordings - windows creaking in the wind, cutlery tapping tables, and all the other random noises of daily life - are weaved together with complex synthesizers and guest vocals to form music which feels organic.

Electronic music this may be, and it's certainly more dance-able than some of Hopkins's earlier solo recordings, but it's the overall summation of his aural textures and soundscapes which impresses more than the sometimes simplistic hooks - the sign of a musician truly getting to grips with the atmospherics he wants to convey.

Andrew Dilks hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
