13. Deify

Sometimes you can feel when a song sounds ominous or when it acts as a harbinger of something bad. In the case of ‘Deify’, when listening to this song, you cannot help but feel this sense of foreboding about whomever the song’s discussing.

With a very over political message, Disturbed use this song to criticize the actual deification of powerful political (and religious) figures in modern society. Despite the song opening to samples from George W. Bush’s speeches, the song isn’t exclusively about him. It’s about a broader problem, where people give God-like qualities to certain people, and then these same people turn a blind eye to those deified people’s crimes or negative qualities.

Lyrics and message aside, this is one of those Disturbed songs that will have you bobbing your head as it plays. It’s also got an interesting bridge, where the opening verse’s lyrics can be heard, with Draiman singing overtop of them, creating an interesting double lyrical movement that makes the song sound even more unique.

Thus, Deify is an often-forgotten song on ‘Ten Thousand Fists’ that certainly deserves revisiting from even the most die-hard of Disturbed fans.

Best Lyrics:

“I only wanted a blessing made,
Now I've been labeled a renegade,
It seems so clear now what I must do,
You're no immortal, I won't let them,
Deify you”
