12. MMXX - Sons Of Apollo
No matter which generation we find ourselves in, there will always be a good helping of prog. Ever since Rush graced us with their presence in the late 70's, bands have come out of the woodwork with pummeling riffs delivered in some of the most complex time signatures ever conceived by man. In the midst of bands like Mastodon, Sons of Apollo has come out with one of the greatest supergroups of the modern age.
With members from Dream Theater, Mr. Big, and Guns N Roses, these guys are the reason many modern rockers picked up their instruments. On MMXX, the band create some of the most eclectic hard rock epics of the year, with songs like "Goodbye Divinity" and "Fall to Ascend." Though it is a prog record through and through, you can hear traces from every corner of rock's past in this album, from Soundgarden to Nine Inch Nails to Meshuggah.
For many newcomers, a song like "New World Today" sounds daunting with its 18 minute runtime, but once you decide to take the plunge, you'll be treated to some of the most dazzling musicianship going today. Complete with instrumental masterclasses and blending disparate sounds together, this record embodies everything great about the prog metal genre.
