13. I Disagree - Poppy
At this point, blending together two polar opposite genres into one song is certainly nothing new in hard rock. With bands like BabyMetal making an entire career off of the concept, it was only a matter of time before we started seeing it pop up in other mainstream artists. Given Poppy's metallic shakeups last year, fans were intrigued to see what kind of tricks she would have up her sleeve.
Though seasoned fans of Poppy are already accustomed to her electropop affectations, I Disagree is a bait and switch that takes on different genres without a care in the world. Coming off of a recent breakup, Poppy pours all of her frustration into this record with songs that verge on the side of nu metal. At any turn, you can hear dual lead solos interspersed with K-pop styles and industrial noise. The sounds are admittedly a bit jarring at first, but once you settle into the groove, the songs actually start to make sense as a lambasting of Poppy's former flame.
This is not going to be every metalhead's cup of tea, but this is a bold new step from an artist who's bound to have one hell of an interesting career. If you're the least bit curious, you owe it to yourself to give this a listen.
