7. I Let It In And It Took Everything - Loathe
If there's anything that's changing in the world of hard rock, it's the consistent genre labels. While there are plenty of bands that fly the flag for punk, metal, and hardcore, the most interesting acts are the ones who take all of these genres and mesh them together into a beautiful sonic concoction. Case in point: Loathe
Started in 2014 in Liverpool, these guys have been pushing their sound into new and unchartered territory on their sophomore release. As opposed to sticking to one genre, this record has its toes dipped in everything from hardcore to electronica to even some post-rock segments. Whenever you start to spin this, it gives off the impression of a band like Deftones, but not in a way that feels derivative. Instead of coming off as B-sides from Chino Moreno and co., Loathe are taking different elements of that sound and blending it together with modern soundscapes to create a delightfully eerie experience.
Far from being a sophomore slump, this record feels like Loathe are on their way to some bigger and brighter things just on the horizon. This may be just a step in the right direction, but what the band come through with next could be something even more phenomenal.
