15 Best Hard Rock Singers Of All Time
10. Gerard Way - My Chemical Romance
Ever since its inception in the mid 90's, pop punk music seemed to have its definitive vocal style trademarked. That nasal tone of voice that everyone used either sends waves of nostalgia to rock fans or utter revulsion in others. While some may not have been able to get over the whine, Gerard Way's vocals always stood out as something special.
Compared to other singers at the time like Patrick Stump or Billie Joe Armstrong, Way's approach to vocals was much more bombastic. Given My Chemical Romance's tendency to go more theatrical with their tunes, it was only fitting that Way followed suit by giving us one showstopping performance after another. Even outside of the band's opus the Black Parade, Way's vocal chops were able to shine on songs like "I'm Not Okay" and "Sing," which turned them from solid rock tracks into mini teenage epics.
By taking all of the best sounds of rock and roll's glory years, Gerard Way was able to frankenstein his vocal style into something that sounded like a street punk version of Freddie Mercury. His vocals may be an acquired taste for some, but once you feel curious, the band's back catalog is a gold mine for Gerard Way's vocal prowess.
