15 Best Heavy Metal Songs Of 2016 (So Far)

3. Katatonia - Serein

2016 also sees the return of prog-metal band Katatonia with their highly anticipated album release, The Fall Of Hearts. While the lead single to be spawned from it entitled €˜Old Hearts Fall€™ was a great taster of the album, the second track to be released off of it really peaks interests for the upcoming LP.

€˜Serein€™ features some of the most majestic music you€™ll find in any genre this year with its soaring expansiveness. A driving drum beat keeps this one in continuous motion, punctuated with colourful splashes of synth noodling, anthemic lead guitar riffs and some of the best metal vocals to emerge in 2016.

It€™s no surprise that they are sometimes labelled as 'metalgaze' because Serein has a hazy aura enveloping much of it. Vocalist Jonas Renske gives this track a real sense of purpose, providing it with an extra emotive layer in the mix. They paint a picture with their choice of instrumentation with each individual component of the track complimenting one another in a way that is only befitting of a band that are shooting this far out for the stars.

Beautifully woven and effortlessly thought-provoking, Serein is constantly ambitious in its intent to take the listener somewhere else entirely, an effortless trait for the band at this point in their career. Katatonia create epic grandeur on this misty beauty.
