Ever since their 2007 album ‘Vicious Delicious’, IM has featured at least one ‘multi-genre’ track, i.e. one that doesn’t fit into one particular musical categorization, yet showcases the best elements of the group’s musical skills. In 2012, it was this track.

Opening with the sound of rain and some very low-intensity instruments, ‘The Messenger 2012’ soon gives way to the heavy synthesis, before giving way to an early bridge that highlights some amazing piano playing. Soon afterwards, the psychedelic phase kicks in, with a strong kick drum and even heavier synthesis, all of which build the track up to another reprieve at the 4:26 mark.

Then the track slows down, leading to a myriad of random sound effects and synthesized instruments which, once again, amplify the ‘weird’ factor, before tapering off into another lead segment that highlights Erez’s keyboard skills. Then, we get another of the band’s signature ‘rises’, as a dubstep-like bass sound is slowly built-up and accelerated until it hits the track’s highest point in terms of build. Finally the track begins to fade in intensity, before ending with a slower version of the earlier ‘metal’ sounds.

This track demonstrates quite clearly that IM are more than capable artists in multiple different musical genres. After all, they were able to craft a track that features classical music, dubstep sounds, psychedelic bass drums, and much more, all in one single piece.
