15 Best Pearl Jam Tracks
10. Better Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4BObpNQqNoFrom Pearl Jam's first more experimental album, 1994's Vitalogy, Better Man was never released as a single. It did still find its way onto the radio and soon climbed up the Billboard rock chart, eventually hitting number 1. An instant Pearl Jam classic, it's hard not to get carried away when listening to this song. See the video above for an example of how to perform live.
The song is apparently about Vedder's stepfather, or "the b**tard who married my Momma" as he said himself. It's surprising, considering the song's tone is quite up-lifting. It is made up entirely of major chords and even encourages many sing-alongs.
Better Man is an example of how songs can just hit home with a fan base. The video is from a 2010 performance in Madison Square Garden. So popular is Better Man, Eddie doesn't have to sing the first verse (something which has become common at gigs now). Only one phrase for it; spine-tingling.
