Many outstanding hip-hop artists have failed to gain the wider recognition that they deserve simply because they identify as QTPoC, with their LGBTQ identities leading to segregation in a culture that is largely recognisably homophobic and preoccupied with hyper-masculinity. One such example is Cakes Da Killa, a vocalist with the skills to match any others, but without the celebrated status of many of his peers. Check out his lauded album The Eulogy, in which Cakes displays a flow that could outdo Lil Kim for sassiness and aggression. Or the strange concepts and production techniques found on his awesome 2015 EPs Hunger Pangs and #IMF. He's added his vocals to some of the most innovative production releases of the past few years too, particularly those of fellow queer artist LSDXOXO. Hopefully Cakes' talent will eventually get him the attention he deserves, and he'll become more than just another gifted artist with a large underground following. He definitely deserves it.
