15 Insane Examples Of Rock N' Roll Excess

8. Keith Moon - Flint Holiday Inn Incident

Keith Moon

In August 1967, The Who were supporting Herman's Hermits in America. Keith Moon decided it was his 21st birthday and it was now legal for him to drink and he could go wild. The band were staying at the Flint Holiday Inn in Michigan. As soon as they arrived, Moon began drinking. The band had publicity to do in Michigan but by the time the concert began, Moon was drunk as a skunk. After the show, back at the Inn, Moon started a food fight. In the melee he lost part of one of his front teeth. At the hospital, the doctors couldn't anaesthetise him because he was so inebriated. Back at the hotel, fire extinguishers were set off, people and things thrown into the pool and a piano was wrecked. The mayhem only stopped when police, flashing around guns, came to break it up. The legend of Moon driving a Lincoln Continental into the pool is apocryphal. It was a Chrysler and he drove it into a pond (according to Roger Daltrey).
