15 Most Underrated Hard Rock Singers EVER
2. Jerry Cantrell - Alice In Chains
Whenever people listen to Alice in Chains, they bring up Layne Staley for a good reason. The man's way of putting his inner turmoil into every word he sang was something even the most angsty of grunge bands weren't able to do. On the other hand, many forget that this band had two lead vocalists for the price of one.
Though Layne was definitely understood to be the frontman of the group, the real musical muscle behind the vocals was always Jerry Cantrell. Before forming a band, Cantrell was involved in his high school choir, which gave him some of the expertise needed to arrange the perfect blend of vocal harmony between him and Staley. On songs like "Would?," you would even get instances where Cantrell would start the song, with Staley coming to the front to deliver the killing blow.
Even when Staley passed away from drug addiction in the early 2000's, Cantrell's voice was a big reason why people could latch onto the band's newest incarnation with William Duvall. Sure, the main singer may not be out there anymore, but the ominous voice of Cantrell shows the spirit of the band's past still creeping in. Layne Staley may have been the frontman for Alice in Chains, but given his ability on vocals and guitar, Jerry Cantrell truly is Alice in Chains.
