This still gets debated among fans of the thrash pioneers Sepultura because not only was it quite a departure from their thrash exploits, but it was the last fragment that the original line-up would leave us before splitting apart.
It is the groups most successful work (certified gold in many countries) and a favorite among critics because of its radical new sound but yet a more grounded approach to songwriting. It has a hard edge but those edges are sanded down somewhat to make it not so bludgeoning that it all becomes a chore to absorb.
Of course you might disagree with that analysis but that hits at the heart of this debate. Were they better before Roots or did it give the group new (although short lived) life?
Whatever way you look at it, it will always be synonymous for being the last statement the first incarnation of the group would produce.
