7. Too Many Broken Hearts - Jason Donovan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR3pQpqeqSc Released: March 1989. UK Chart Peak: #1. Oz Chart Peak: #7. In the UK in 1989 it was Jason Donovan's year. He had two #1 singles, his debut album became the biggest seller of the year and, up and down the country, teenage girls, their older sisters, their mothers and, in some cases, even their brothers, fathers and uncles were screaming, crying and fainting at the merest suggestion of his name. The mullet was gone, the much anticipated duet with Kylie was done and Jason started '89 as he meant to continue - with the first of his two number ones for the year. Too Many Broken Hearts went on to become not only the year's fourth-highest selling single in the UK but, arguably, his best known song. The video showed us a bronzed 20-year-old Jason lazing on the balcony of a timber shack, wandering around the tops of undulating hills, manhandling boxes of fruit, driving an old ute and generally looking quite strapping and rural, underneath picture perfect blue skies and a blazing sun. All the while he strummed an electric guitar that was only occasionally plugged into anything. What could be more Aussie and adorable? No wonder they were all fainting and crying.

I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
