When I know that you're alone, I wander to your home and catch a glimpse or two It seems that all the time, the thought that's on my mind is being with you The times I've tried to see you, you know I would meet you any time night or day And still you just refuse, but no matter what you do I'll never let you get away
1989 was an astonishingly successful year for SAW. Among their achievements was sending seven singles to the summit of the chart, of which they wrote and produced six. One of the six was a song about a small woman with a big auburn perm who was quite clearly about to get done for stalking. Well... sort of. Sonia Evans was an 18-year-old unknown Liverpudlian with a thick accent, big smile and infectiously bubbly attitude. You'll Never Stop Me Loving You had just the right mix of 'SAW sound', cheesy lyrics, a stomping beat and a cute video to capture the public's imagination, at least for a little while. In pre-release, radio listeners went wild for Kylie's new single... yes, people were determined to believe it was Kylie Minogue - it sounded exactly like her. Of course, 25 years later it seems so obvious that it isn't Kylie, but the assumption that it was her was probably as much about the 'SAW sound' and the production process as it was the poor sound quality of 1980s AM radio. The video was set in a dance studio where poor little 'two left feet' Sonia was falling head over heels for her dance teacher, while also falling flat on her face or onto the floor at every opportunity. In the choruses she took to a rotating platform, jiggling her arms expressively, while the room spun around her. It was a sweet interpretation of what was otherwise a slightly disturbing lyric.

I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
