4. Especially For You - Kylie Minogue And Jason Donovan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGuNsiSZ9RI Released: December 1988. UK Chart Peak: #1. Oz Chart Peak: #2. If ever a single was released purely to silence demand from fans, this was it. Such was the clamour to hear a Kylie and Jason duet by the end of 1988 that SAW finally gave in. In fact the cobbling together of Especially For You was so rushed that Jason's debut single Nothing Can Divide Us and Kylie's Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi were both still recent additions to the charts, while Kylie's next single It's No Secret, already pressed and ready to ship, was pulled from release altogether. SAW had a habit of covering crusty old ballads by creating anaemic, effete arrangements so saccharine they were gag-worthy. Every time their balladeering abilities were criticised SAW claimed writing original ballads was incredibly difficult. They must've drawn on every ounce of creative energy they could collectively muster for Especially For You, then, turning out a out-and-out triumph of original pop cheese. Of all the songs they ever wrote, none sold more than Especially For You. The video for Especially For You was shot entirely in Sydney and the chemistry between them was obvious in every shot they appeared together in. But while Kylie continued on to become an international superstar, time took its toll on their relationship and Jason's career, not to mention poor Jason himself. In December 2012, 24 years after the song's release, Kylie and Jason performed Especially For You together live for the first time ever - for fans who'd waited a lifetime to hear it, there's no doubt that it was especially for them.

I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
