9. G.T.O. - Sinitta

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HexEepKU6is Released: December 1987. UK Chart Peak: #15. Oz Chart Peak: 52. Poor Sinitta. The term 'fashion victim' comes to mind quite frequently. Thankfully her songs were more often than not a great deal better than her wardrobe. This one was a cracker as SAW compositions go and was, at very least, a rare twist on the usual boy-meets-girl schlock. While her 'toy boy' (pun intended) and his well-choreographed buddies idolised a delicious red 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that had pride of place front and centre, Sinitta could only grumble about how she couldn't tell if he loved her more than his car. Variation on a theme this may well have been, but SAW hadn't yet reached the point where everything was quite so formulaic as it would become. In 1987 they could still come up with the odd gem. Ever the fashion victim, at one point in the GTO video Sinitta donned a tutu and took a turn about the floor, leaping, twisting, kicking and pointing in front of the hallowed GTO. Since nothing else she wore in the video looked nearly as good her, she might just as well have stuck with the tutu, so shockingly bad was every other outfit - just like every other outfit she wore in every other video. Still, at least the GTO looked good. Little wonder he was into it more than he was into her.

I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
