8. They Bridged Black And White Audiences

At the end of the ‘70s, rock music was whiter than ever. Instead of the bluesy swinging rock of previous decades, punk rock bands went exclusively angular and geeky. Meanwhile, Talking Heads released a cover of “Take Me to the River” by Al Green, who was a soul hero of theirs.

When their version cracked the Billboard Top 30, they showed that bringing together black and white listeners was very possible in a time of unpleasant musical separation.
