1975: 10 Songs You Need To Hear Before Their New Album Drops
9. Sex
Although this is technically the follow-up to "Chocolate", this song existed long before its predecessor.
"Sex" existed in a slightly different form on the band's second EP (which was named after the song). That EP came out in November 2012, almost a year before it got its official release as a single.
This song showcases the band's trademark glib view on life with the story of a man embroiled in an affair with a woman in a relationship.
Lines like "she's got a boyfriend anyway" and "Does he take care of you/Or could I easily fill his shoes?" almost downplay the seriousness of the situation.
However, lines like "if we're gonna do anything, we might as well just f***" keep the seriousness alive and document the protagonist's frustration that the girl of his dreams isn't available, but is entertaining his romantic fantasies.
That's all without discussing the punchy, punky music that is the backdrop to this contorted love story. Before they become genre-bending pop icons, the band could easily have been like so many other wannabe Ramones, but the fact that this song exists in their repetoire shows just versatile the band has become.
Seriously, check this song out now.
