6. Any Shape You Take - Indigo De Souza
Indigo de Souza loves her mom. We love her mom’s art.
As she did with her first album, North Carolina’s latest breakout star once again asked her mother to get one of her visions down on paper, and the result is an impressive piece of painting.
Any Shape You Take was written after de Souza got out of a “dysfunctional and co-dependent” relationship and the title hence alludes to being open to change, learning to love ourselves whichever shape we may take. But change also means letting go of certain things, loosing some parts of our identity. This dual theme of death and renaissance is at the core of this apocalyptic artwork. The zombified versions of mother and daughter standing in that desolated supermarket aisle obviously evoke destruction and death, but the permeating greenery and invading vegetation also symbolize life being birthed again.
De Souza’s music, unashamed ballads about loss and doubt sung over joyous pop garage sounds, does echo this artwork perfectly.
