15. Cada Vez Cadáver - Fito & Fitipaldis

After a prolonged period of uninspired covers, Spanish rock band Fito y Fitipaldis returned to the fun and innocent simplicity of their early artworks. Instead of the dull photographs that would come after, 1998’s A Puerta Cerrada and 2001’s Los Sueños Locos featured band leader Fito in playful and voluntarily uncomplicated sketches.

Cada Vez Cadáver (“A Corpse Every Time”, but the dope homonymy is lost in translation) closes this drawing trilogy in style. While the first two were almost doodle-like, this one takes the complexity up a notch (the detail on the motorcycle almost makes it look like it was taken straight from an old illustrated encyclopaedia). It depicts Fito in skeleton form and goes to show that even in death, he is never without his goatee, his rocker’s jacket, his Basque beret and his cigarette.

Tonal harmony between the colours, dynamic and engaging design: this is simplicity done right.
