20 Country Albums Every Rock Fan Should Listen To
10. Reunions - Jason Isbell
Jason Isbell is one of those few artists in Nashville toeing the line between country and rock. Originally a fixture of the Drive By Truckers, Isbell's solo work with the 400 Unit has produced some of the most enduring stories that have come out of the city of twang for a long time. Even though some would prefer something like the Nashville Sound as his solo opus, there's something to be said about his most recent effort Reunions.
Across this album, we see Isbell coming to terms with growing up, as the rest of his band lays back just where they need to for the emotional gut punch of these songs to shine through. Whether its the struggles with his faith on St. Peter's Autograph or watching his daughter grow up on the ending track Letting You Go, you can tell that this is a guy who wants to make the most of his middle years while coming to terms with his rock and roll past.
Even though he couldn't have possibly planned this, the line "it gets easier, but it never gets easy" is a mantra that ends up fitting the year 2020 so damn well. For any rock fan interested in their artistic integrity, this is an album that only seems to get more and more pertinent with the passing of the days.
