20 Greatest Empowering Break-Up Songs

8. (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone - The Monkees

The History: The song originally appeared on the Paul Revere & the Raiders album Midnight Ride in spring 1966. The Monkees covered it the same year and it became a hit. Since then, many bands have covered this song.

Why It's Great: The Monkees are more known for songs that are cheery like €œI'm a Believer€ and €œDaydream Believer€, but this song is great because it deviates from their norm. It talks about a girl that has caught some version of the fame monster, and that he's not gonna fall for her tricks anymore.

The metaphor of a stepping stone is unique, and something I'm sure we've all felt at one time or another. It's a catchy, solid '60s rock song. If it's good enough for the Sex Pistols to cover, then it's good enough for me.
