Townsend's playing has always been big and ballsy, from his signature windmill power chord to smashing his instruments to smithereens he has never failed to make a statement. While band mate Roger Daltrey played pretty boy rock star to perfection it was Townsend's songwriting and aggressive attack and rhythms that propelled the band to a career of legendary status that sees the two continuing to perform live in 2013 despite of being ready for the home, numerically at least. 17. Heavily influenced by classical composer Paganini, Malmsteen's technical prowess raised the bar for aspiring metal guitarists appreciably. Hailing from Sweden with devilish good looks a penchant for medieval puffiness Malmsteen's first foray in North America in 1982 saw him play in Steeler and then warm up the guitarist's chair for Steve Vai in Alcatrazz. The years '84 through '86 saw him release some of Metals most technically beautiful and awe inspiring playing.
