20 Greatest Metal Albums Of All Time

7. Megadeth - Rust In Peace (1990)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d4ui9q7eDM Megadeth are seen by some as an orphan Metallica offshoot, since band founder Dave Mustaine was famously ejected by the Bay Area legends before they hit the big time. But Megadeth has proven resilient, carving their own path for the past three decades and solidifying their style. When Rust In Peace was released in the early nineties only the most closed-minded critics would still have labeled them as cheap 'Tallica knock-offs - this was the album which reminded us why Megadeth should be part of the Big Four. A sober, focused Megadeth was behind this one, and it showed - Sharp fretwork and extended progressive build-ups and breakdowns made Rust In Peace a more technically-advanced piece, tied around the duelling guitars of Mustaine and newcomer Marty Friedman. Tightly coiled riffs spiral off of one another through some of the more complex tracks, others just grab hold of one killer bass line and run with it. Perhaps Metallica will always outshine them for sheer crowd pull and charisma, but Rust In Peace secured Megadeth their own place in the sun forevermore.

Game-obsessed since the moment I could twiddle both thumbs independently. Equally enthralled by all the genres of music that your parents warned you about.
