20 Greatest Metal Albums Of All Time

6. Sepultura - Roots (1996)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_6IjeprfEs Roots was a massive album for Sepultura, both musically and personally for the band. A literal return to their roots, this was world music for metalheads. It was untamed tribal war music that made you want to go out and get tattoos on your face and buy a spear. Down-tuned, raw, Roots was a different beast to the fast thrash-death tempo that the band was known for, littered with South American flourishes which slotted effortlessly into the Sepultura style. The Brazillian impact on the album was most obvious through the hammering tribal percussion, a definite theme throughout Roots and a hub for each track to hinge on. Sometimes intricate, mostly wonderfully violent, these mesmerising rhythms were the driving force - Cavalera's vein-popping aggression hanging on for dear life along with the rest of the band. It turned out to be Max's last outing with this hugely influential band, but we'll always remember Roots as the album Sepultura was born to create.

Game-obsessed since the moment I could twiddle both thumbs independently. Equally enthralled by all the genres of music that your parents warned you about.
