Evil Spells Death Metal really should get a mention and Altars of Madness, released in 1989, stands out as a defining moment for the much-maligned genre. Try not to be put off by Death Metal's formidable reputation; this is from the early days and the vocals are decipherable, raspy as opposed to guttural, the riffs are catchy and there are an insane amount of ingenious hooks hidden beneath the complex time arrangements and technical drum patterns. Taking Thrash Metal to its next logical level, Morbid Angel somehow tapped into something uniquely special and otherworldly. Bludgeoning raw riffs and squealing solos compliment technically stunning drumming by human drum-machine Pete Sandoval to create a delicious atmosphere of devilish dread best exemplified by the stand-out track "Visions from the Dark Side". Singer/Bassist David Vincents vocal melodies miraculously compliment the many unexpected stops, starts and off-time signatures, creating a coherent collection of songs that threaten to veer completely out of control yet somehow retain a sense of melody and structure; a stunning achievement from true originators. A world without Altars of Madness would be very dull indeed and both Death and Extreme Metal owes this ground-breaking record an enormous debt.

I love Heavy Metal, and generally anything that involves a guitar and loud noises, so I figured it was about time I put all the useless information in my head to good use and start writing a few things. Most of the time I'll be writing nonsense but occasionally I may surprise myself and appear half-way knowledgable.....but you can be the judge of that. Thanks for your fleeting attention!
