The Jamaica-born roots reggae singer, renowned for his sweet falsetto voice, often uses it to convey soul, frustration and despair in his music. My Country is essentially a cry of protest, a black man's declaration of belonging in the face of adversity. Campbell himself said of his music, I sing reality things. I dont write simple music. My messages are strong so people can hear them. I sing to teach people things. Striving to educate and enlighten people is a common trait of roots reggae music, particularly in reference to segregation and atrocities of the past, such as slavery. The triumphant trumpets, soulful voice and bold lyrics on this track combine to make a truly fantastic listening experience, one that is infinitely more meaningful than some of the aggressive dancehall tracks posing as reggae today.
