https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkg-bzTHeAk What's not to love about Neil Young? A genuine legend with a trademark voice, Young has never been one to shy away from political content in his guitar-driven music. Though not his biggest hit, Ohio is a brave counter-culture anthem, written and composed by Young himself in reaction to the Kent State shootings of 1970. For those who don't know, the May 4 massacre occurred at Kent State University in Ohio, where four unarmed students protesting against the Vietnam War were gunned down by the Ohio National Guard. The song evokes feelings of outrage in the listener, with emotional lyrics such as, 'What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground?', a reference to the girls murdered in what was widely publicised as a peaceful protest. Young also addresses Richard Nixon and his 'tin soldiers', expressing shock and horror, ultimately claiming that enough is enough. He goes onto sing 'We're finally on our own', emphasising the divide between the people and the authorities.
