2. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRtW1MAZ32M Despite their reputation as miserabilists, The Smiths actually wrote some of the most beautiful, life affirming love songs ever and this pips 'Hand in Glove', as their greatest love song by a nose. Amidst all the revelations from his recent tome 'Autobiography, the most shocking revelation for me what that Morrissey initially thought this song wasn't good enough to be included on their masterwork 'The queen is dead' thankfully Johnny Marr wasn't having any of it. 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' is one of their greatest moments, part defiance, part awe and all-round wonderful. For this, their greatest single that never was, Morrissey and Marr wrote a stone cold classic that belongs in the pantheon of great love songs. So what makes it so wonderful? The music strolls along at a gentle pace, beautifully orchestrated by Marr and the words float above them, Morrissey delivering a constant and intense declaration of the wonder of love and how it makes him feel special, proud and ultimately completely devoted - "And if a double decker bus, crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die." It may not feature the most conventional lyrics you'll hear in a love song, but that's another reason to adore it. It might be a tad too intense to play on a first date however; I'd save it for your first anniversary at least.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
