20 Love Songs To Cure Your January Blues

1. Let's Stay Together €“ Al Green

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnRHYAp4ygE In a very tough field, it's a victory for a voice that's one in a million and bunch of lyrics that speak of true love. This song has told its story in many places, probably most famously in Pulp Fiction, but if you've heard such a song of devotion expressed with more eloquence then let me know. Over-familiarity with a song can breed contempt, but 'Let's stay together' is timeless, and quite rightly one of those songs that you'll never tire of listening to. There are two key reasons that this takes the top spot. Firstly, as an expression of love it's peerless, and it doesn't have a precise setting, it could be about a couple who have been together for a few weeks to multiple decades. Any song of the heart - be that about the good or the bad time - has to strike a universal chord, which brings me to the second reason that this is the winner. Whilst there are a variety of genres featured here, some may not appeal to everyone, be that they are too poppy, too soppy or otherwise, but 'Let's Stay Together' is quite rightly a classic because anyone who likes music should like this, a wonderful arrangement, a great tune, breath-taking lyrics delivered with the voice of an angel. So what's not to like? Finally, Al Green has been a reverend for the last few years and sings his ceremonies, whilst I can't imagine a better way to tie the knot, I'd personally refrain from doing so with Al as the MC, you'd wake up in the morning to find your bride has gone, leaving you a note that says 'That man understands what love is all about, I think I've found my true love', and you'd be lying in bed alone thinking exactly the same thing. What a song.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
