20 Love Songs To Cure Your January Blues

16. The Power Of Love - Gabrielle Aplin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNpeK7sDLzE Now, this is not what you would call a 'cool' version of this song by any means, but that's exactly the point. Love songs don't being need to be concerned with being cool at all, as long as they're good enough - the ones that really hit the sweet spot are those that capture the mood and feeling of love and this does so beautifully. Gabrielle Aplin's version couldn't be more different than Frankie Goes to Hollywood's original, which was all melodrama and bombast. Here the song takes a much more tender turn - fragile yet joyful, understated yet triumphant. It sounds incredibly innocent, like the stage after that initial rush, when lust gets joined by something more meaningful and precious. But the best trick played here is that for something that sounds so sombre, it's an incredibly happy song and the message is incredibly upbeat - 'love is like energy, rushing in, rushing inside of me'. Whether or not she'll ever record anything as wonderful as this again, there are two reasons to truly cherish this song, Firstly, whilst it was recorded for an advert, it's executed so well we'll forget that with the fullness of time and secondly it delivers the story so well, so just listen to it and rejoice - if someone sang this to you in this style, I'm sure you'd be smitten.

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about. As well as writing for What Culture, I occasionally write a blog http://tedney.blogspot.co.uk and sometimes use Twitter, but sparingly @TedneyNash
