20 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs Of All Time

9. Alabama Song - The Doors

At the beginning of psychedelia, The Doors sounded like they were coming from another planet. By taking elements of jazz, blues, and rock, Jim Morrison and co. created an eclectic mix of sounds that would never be equaled by any of their contemporaries. Though most of the band's menace came from Morrison himself, there was also an alternative to their drug-addled freakouts: German theater.

When trying to find other material for their debut album, the band stumbled upon an opera called Mahagonny by Brecht and Vile. Nothing really stood out as particularly captivating, but there was promise in the track "Alabama Song," which told the tale of ne'er do wells trying to find the nearest bar for a night of hellraising. Given the notoriety of the Doors at clubs like the Whiskey-a-Go-Go, the marriage made almost too much sense.

Switching up the chord sequence and bathing it in Morrison's ringing baritone, the original song went from an untempo search for booze to a sad dirge as the try to make their way through the seedy sides of the Sunset Strip. Leave it to the Doors to take a frantic musical passage and turn it into the greatest pub singalong in rock history. The pub in question may be in the middle of Hell, but this tune will have you singing every time.
