20 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs Of All Time
8. The Ballad Of El Goodo - Big Star
Out of all the great bands to come out of the 70's, Big Star is one of the best kept secrets that nobody talks about. Sure, their star power couldn't carry them past their debut album #1 Record, but the 10 songs on that record have laid the blueprint for what power pop would become with bands like Cheap Trick and The Jam.
Almost any track off this record could be considered underrated, but if you want to get intrigued by this band, you have to throw on "The Ballad of El Goodo." Starting off with the bell-like tone of the electric guitar, the song is the sound of pop slowly developing its rock edge. As the verses maintain a pretty even melodic structure, the way that the band builds up the chorus with drums and vocal harmonies sucks you into the action the moment you hear it.
This may not have set the world on fire back in the day, but you better believe that every single record exec trying to put together a boy band in the last 20 years has used this song as a template. It's nothing too serious, but once you hear the lyric "there ain't no one going to turn me around," you'll follow this song to the ends of the Earth.
