20 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs Of All Time
1. Because - The Beatles
So much has been said about the Beatles' Abbey Road that it's practically become a parody of itself. There's probably a good portion of the population who have done the famous crosswalk photos who don't even have a clue who the Fab Four are. While the record is filled with classic material, one of the Beatles' finest moments is hidden amongst the greats.
Just before the band's closing medley, "Because" is one of the most sophisticated songs that the band would ever compose. Inspired by Yoko Ono playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata backwards, John Lennon put together a skeleton of the song and presented it to producer George Martin. Rather than overload the track with complex instrumentation, the song became a showcase for the band's harmony work, as they layered almost 9 voices on top of one another to make the listener feel like they're floating on air.
The lyrics of the song are also pure poetry, as Lennon details how all the elemental forces of the universe are connected through the power of love. As the vocals continue to soar, the ending strains from the guitars and harmonies lead to the song evaporating into thin air. Abbey Road may have one classic song after another, but even George Harrison and Paul McCartney admitted that this was the best song to come from the entire project.
