20 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs Of All Time
15. Zoo Station - U2
U2 were in the midst of a transition at the end of the 80's. After dominating the decade as kings of rock with albums like the Joshua Tree, how were they going to fit in to the new sounds of the 90's that had been overtaken by alternative music? From the very first track of Achtung Baby, you knew that these guys were going to be a band to remember.
From its glitchy instrumentation to Bono's mechanical vocal style, "Zoo Station" was the perfect song to announce U2's more electronic direction. While grunge may have been the word of the day, the band found their calling in more industrial material, using different digital effects to create some of the weirdest sonic landscapes they had ever conceived. Whereas songs like "With or Without You" had a sound that made you feel like you could conquer the world, "Zoo Station" was seductive, sleazy, and disturbing all at the same time.
For any normal band, this kind of record would be dead on arrival, but the brilliant melody and humanity cutting through the mix gave U2 their second wind. This definitely wasn't The Joshua Tree Part II, but with songs as good as this, did it really need to be?
