20 Most Underrated Nu-Metal Anthems

12. Chimaira – Sp Lit

Easily one of nu-metal’s hardest hitting bands, Cleveland, Ohio six-piece Chimaira tore it up on their debut LP Pass out of Existence. Released through Roadrunner, the record was a pulverizing exercise in eardrum-battering brutality. If you needed any more evidence of their crushing sound, look no further than album highlight ‘Sp Lit.’

All of the sub-genre’s elements are at play here; downtuned guitars, scintillating sampling, and a vicious vocal display courtesy of group spearhead Mark Hunter. What sets it apart from most of their counterparts though is the melodic, yet heavy chorus. Hunter delivers some stellar clean vocals, while the instrumentation continues to dwell in the lower rungs of the musical scale. It’s a weird yet intoxicating combustion of beauty and ugliness wrapped into one.

This explosive cut is one of those infectious tracks that will be stuck in your head long after hearing it – certainly one that deserved more recognition upon release.
