20 Most Underrated Nu-Metal Anthems

18. Machine Head – From This Day

One of the more blatant attempts at jumping on the nu-metal bandwagon was Machine Head’s transition from their brilliantly brutal 1997 release The More Things Change to the edge-softened, rap-heavy The Burning Red in 1999. The record was a far cry from their punishing beginnings but they still managed to produce a few mighty tunes onto it such as ‘Five’ and ‘Exhale the Vile.’

Lead single ‘From This Day’ might not be the best song on there, but it’s certainly the most nu-metal in sound. It features some of the group’s trademark traits like their beloved use of pinch harmonics on the lead guitar but it inserts more new elements in place of their fundamental sound, a controversial move indeed.

Flynn’s rapping isn’t the best and the human drum machine Dave McClain isn’t allowed to let rip in his usual manner. Nonetheless, the song still packs a punch because of a very catchy chorus and a killer breakdown (annoyingly not featured on the single release).

It’s quite hard to swallow from a group that brought us songs like ‘Davidian’ and ‘Ten Ton Hammer,’ but if you can look past that, ‘From This Day’ still possesses the band’s knack for writing a well formed song – all be it a watered down formation.
