20 Music Videos That Defined The 90s

14. Guns N' Roses - "November Rain" (1991)

In the bygone days of the early 90's, videos still had the marketing clout to be of the utmost importance to record companies (remember those?), and they thought nothing of spending millions and millions of dollars to promote their artists, and G'n'R were the top priority of Geffen in 1991. Thus we get this amazing glittering pile of clumsy metaphors and overblown cliche, (complete with over-the-top guitar solo from Slash) spread across three videos. As the follow up album "The Spaghetti Incident?" was largely ignored, this was the last time G'N'R were seen as an actual band and not Axl and a collection of whatever hangers-on were surrounding him at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SbUC-UaAxE

13. Beastie Boys - "Sabotage" (1994)

Sabotage 600x300 Bearing the all-important seal of Beavis and Butthead approval, this immortal video by hip-hop pioneers the B-Boys remains their most iconic and also most hilarious video to date, a note-perfect parody on 70's cop shows such as "Starsky and Hutch" ("Featuring Nathan Wind as Cochese!") that received massive airplay in the summer of '94. The B-Boys were never this tightly funky or this effortlessly fun again. Sadly, Ad Rock's death ensured that we will never see a sequel to this masterpiece, but every time you watch this video it's like 1994 all over again. www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5rRZdiu1UE

Hi there, What Culture-ers! I'm William Graff, a 40-year old freelance writer from the wilds of Capitol Hill in beautiful Denver, Colorado. I enjoy many things such as beer, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, record collecting, stand-up comedy, long aimless walks, and of course the Broncos, which is required by law if you live here. I appreciate all feedback for my writing, but I prefer cash and/or deleted Smiths singles in lieu of praise. Rock on!
