20 Music Videos That Defined The 90s

12. Smashing Pumpkins - "Today" (1993)

Today 600x300 A heavy rotation staple of MTV from the early Lollapalooza era, here we have self-appointed spokesman for a generation Billy Corgan driving an ice cream truck, reading a comic book, and ruminating on the nature of existence.Y'know, stuff we did all the time in the 90's. A breezy, summery confection of a tune, this predates the unfortunate later Pumpkins where Corgan lost his hair and turned into a creepy Nosferatu vampire. This clip remains the Pumpkins biggest hit and commercial peak, and the one point where the Pumpkins truly had Gen X's attention. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmUZ6nCFNoU

11. Daft Punk - "Around The World" (1997)

Daft 600x300 All of the videos from Daft Punk's debut album are creatively amazing, but famed director Michel Gondry's clip for "Around The World" is particularly impressive, a visual interpretation of the song with identically costumed dancers representing various facets of the song (the drum beat, bass line, etc.) in perfect synchronicity. It's really more of a work of performance art than a video, and has aged rather well (unlike most videos of the period.) It holds up very well to repeated viewings as you can always manage to notice something new. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9MszVE7aR4

Hi there, What Culture-ers! I'm William Graff, a 40-year old freelance writer from the wilds of Capitol Hill in beautiful Denver, Colorado. I enjoy many things such as beer, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, record collecting, stand-up comedy, long aimless walks, and of course the Broncos, which is required by law if you live here. I appreciate all feedback for my writing, but I prefer cash and/or deleted Smiths singles in lieu of praise. Rock on!
