20 Music Videos That Defined The 90s

4. Prodigy - "Firestarter" (1997)

Firestarter 600x300 Oooh, scary. This video features the band snarling and thrashing around a subterranean landscape dotted with the obligatory pyrotechnics, introducing many befuddled MTV fans to electronic music. It put a face on what to many was an anonymous genre, enabling them to sell truckloads of records. "Electronica" as it was called then, experienced a brief period of mainstream acceptance in the late 90's. Skrillex was probably one of them, sucking on a large pacifier and staring, hypnotized, into the television. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmin5WkOuPw

3. Britney Spears - "Oops....I Did It Again" (1998)

Oops I Did It Again Britney Spears 4354576 640 320 Yeah, don't lie. You've sung this song in a shower into a bottle of shampoo while dancing around maniacally. It's OK, so did the rest of the world. Britney was never as jailbait fresh or perfectly on-point in that red vinyl outfit as she was here, conveying perfectly the "sexy innocent schoolgirl" archetype that sold truckloads of records and launched a new pop megastar. An earworm of the highest magnitude, the sexy schoolgirl video caused an army of dads to purchase the record (ostensibly for their teenage daughters). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CduA0TULnow

Hi there, What Culture-ers! I'm William Graff, a 40-year old freelance writer from the wilds of Capitol Hill in beautiful Denver, Colorado. I enjoy many things such as beer, Doctor Who, The Simpsons, record collecting, stand-up comedy, long aimless walks, and of course the Broncos, which is required by law if you live here. I appreciate all feedback for my writing, but I prefer cash and/or deleted Smiths singles in lieu of praise. Rock on!
